How To Sew A Bandana/Kerchief

Bandannas and kerchiefs are not only stylish and fun to wear, but they are also an excellent way to keep the hair out of your face while cooking or while doing other activities. Not only that, they also come in handy on a bad hair day. ;)

You can find bandannas in just about all clothing stores, and generally they are pretty cheap to buy. However, you can save yourself some of that money simply by making your own. This is especially true if you sew a lot because you can easily use a piece of leftover material from another sewing project. This way, the only cost involved is the time that you spent into it.

To Sew the Bandana

Step 1: Measure and cut a 20" x 20" piece fabric.

Step 2: Using a hemmer foot, sew a narrow rolled hem around all 4 sides. It gets a little tricky at the corners, but if you practice it a bit, you'll get the hang of it in no time.

Tip: When starting the rolled hem at a corner, use a small dab of fabric glue to hold the rolled edge in place while inserting the fabric into the sewing machine.

To Sew the Kerchief:

Step 1: Again, cut a square 20" x 20" piece of fabric.

Skip steps 2 & 3 if you already cut a triangle.

Step 2: Fold it in half by bringing the opposite corners together in order to create a triangle.

Step 3: Cut along the folded edge. You now have 2 pieces of fabric for sewing 2 kerchiefs.

Step 4: Using a hemmer foot, sew a narrow rolled hem along all 3 sides of the kerchief in order to complete it.

Step 5: As with any sewing project, you should press the seams in order to help make it look like it was professionally sewn.
