Some of you may know that I’ve been battling and trying to overcome a life-long illness. Conventional doctors could not help me. They let me get sick to the point of near-death, and then they told me I couldn’t be helped. So much for that, but thank God I never went back there again.
Instead, I went looking for the natural way. And with the help of a few natural gurus, I was able to pin-point the root cause of all my health problems. Since then I’ve been trying to cleanse so that I can overcome this mess inside my body. I’ve come a long way, but I still have a long ways to go… and little by little, I’m getting there.
Anyhow, due to my illness, my immune system is pretty much shot… and I’m allergic to EVERYTHING, including pets, smoke, perfumes, detergents, and believe it or not, but I’m also allergic to dust and most processed foods. And no matter how hard I try, I just can’t get away from some of these allergens. It’s kind of hard when you’re living in apartments or buildings with other people who don’t have the same sensitivities.
Soo… I’ve come up with a home-made solution that kind of helps in a few areas – a tissue mask. It’s great against dust if you’re cleaning or vacuuming. And believe it or not, it does help with smoke and other perfumes as well… although it’s not 100%. You can still smell the offending odors, and it does affect me, but not near as bad if I wear it than if I don’t. So for me it’s been worth it.
The average person might wear something like this if they’re cleaning out a super filthy garage or a basement that hasn’t been dusted for like 300 years. Regardless … I thought I’d share my product anyways … just in case someone else is interested.
So here it is:
You can use any yarn or thread that you want, and any hook suitable hook for the yarn. For this tutorial I used Red Heart Luster Sheen and an E crochet hook. But I’ve also made it in worsted weight yarn and an H crochet hook. You simply adjust the number of chains for a custom fit.
In other materials you will need your tissue that you normally keep at your desk or near the bed.
And the pattern:
Ch 80 (or more or less, depending on yarn and the length that you need), sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across to last 15. ch 15. FO. Make another one.
The two 15 chains on each end are used to tie the tissue, and the other ends tie at the back of the head. If you need more than 15 chains to tie around the tissue, by all means leave more at the end, and then just chain more to even things out.
You can use one or two tissues. I used two tissues for extra strength. You could use more, but I find breathing through two is enough. Regardless of how many you use, lay them flat on top of each other.
Then fold them into an accordion with about 1″ folds.
Now we make music and dance … but first we must finish the mask.
Take the strings and tie each end of the tissue using the unworked chains. I’m not sure what the knot is called, but you want to have one loop so that it pulls out easy. You could make a bow, but you’d need more than 15 chains for that. Oh and you want to make sure that the knots face the same way on each end so the mask doesn’t twist.
And that’s all there’s to it! Now you have a dust mask that you may or may not ever wear…
