Round Clustered Hot Pad

A free crochet pattern for a round clustered hot pad. It is made with double crochet clusters to create extra cushioning and protection for the surface. The edging is done with the reverse single crochet to create a nice cord-like ridge. Click here for a tutorial on how to make the reverse single crochet stitch.

You can also make a matching coaster simply by doing the edging after the first 2 rounds. The coaster tends to curl up around the edge, which naturally fits around a mug. The finished coaster measures approximately 4 inches in diameter.

It's important to use coasters at home to keep your tables free of water rings. In old cars which didn't have cup holders there are probably many water ring marks left on the dash.

Special Stitches:

Beg CL: Ch 3,*Yo, insert hook in st or lp indicated, yo and pull through, yo and pull through 2 lps on hook, repeat from * another 3 times, 5 lps on hook, yo and pull through all 5 lps on hook.

CL: *Yo, insert hook in st or lp indicated, yo and pull through, yo and pull through 2 lps on hook, repeat from * another 4 times, 6 lps on hook, yo and pull through all 6 lps on hook.

Ch 5, join with sl st to first ch to form circle

Rnd 1: Work beg CL in first ch, ch 2, (CL, ch 2) in each ch around, join with sl st.

Rnd 2: Work beg CL on top of first CL, *ch 2, CL in next ch-2 lp, ch 2,** CL in next CL, repeat from * around ending at **, join with sl st.

Rnd 3: Same as rnd 2.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each st and ch around, join with sl st.

Rnd 5: Same as rnd 2.

Rnd 6 (Edging): Ch 1, work 1 reverse sc in each st and ch around. Join with sl st, fasten off.
