A Bullion Stitch Bag for Children

Here is a cute child’s bag for small toys and trinkets. It might also make for a cute gift bag for small children’s books, or for the teacher.

And, if you make the straps longer, you could also use this as a handy purse for your phone and keys. Just make sure to line it if using it for keys as they could wiggle their way out without notice.

As you can see, I only used one color, but I’m thinking it would look lovely if you used two colors for a nice two-toned look.

This bag for children has not been tested by anyone other than myself, so let me know if you run into any problems. Thanks so much.

Crochet Pattern Information:

Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials:

Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver – 100% worsted-weight (#4) acrylic, – small amount.
Crochet Hook: H/8-5.00mm

Measurements:

  • Gauge: 2″ = 7 sts.
  • Finished Size: 5.5″ by 5.5″

Abbreviations:

Bullion St = Bullion Stitch
Ch/Chs = Chain/Chains
Hk = Hook
Lp/Lps = Loop/Loops
Sc = Single Crochet
Sk = Skip
Sl St = Slip Stitch
Sp/Sps = Space/Spaces
St/Sts = Stitch/Stitches
YO = Yarn Over

Special Stitch Instructions:

Bullion St: YO 6 times, insert hk into designated st/sp, yo and pull through (8 lps on hk), yo and pull through all lps on hk, yo and pull through to close stitch. Bullion Stitch Tutorial

Crochet Pattern Instructions:

Rnd 1: Ch 16, sc in 2nd ch from hk and into next 13 chs, 3 sc in last ch, turn and working into free lps of starting chs, sc in next 13 chs, 2 sc in last ch; join with sl st in first sc. [32 sts]

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as join and into next 14 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 15 sts, 3 sc in last st; join with sl st in first sc. [36 sts]

Rnd 3: Ch 3, work bullion st in same st as join; *sk next st, bullion st in next st; repeat from * around; sk last st, join with sl st in first bullion st. [18 bullion sts]

Rnd 4: Ch 1, (sc, ch 3) in sp before next bullion st and into each sp around; join with sl st in first sc. [18 ch-3 sps]

Rnd 5: Sl st into ch-3 sp, ch 3, work bullion st into same ch-3 sp and into each ch-3 sp around; join with sl st to first bullion st. [18 bullion sts]

Rnds 6-11: Repeat rnds 4 and 5 until you have reached a desired height making sure to end with rnd 5.

Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in same st as join and into each st and ch-1 around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten Off.

Handles (Make 2):

Row 1: Leaving an 8″ tail, ch 30, working in back bumps, sc in second ch from hk and into each ch across. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st and into each st across. Fasten off leaving an 8″ tail for sewing.

Attach the handles to the bag, one on each side.
