Growing Stripes Super Bulky Crochet Throw Pattern
This super bulky crochet throw pattern is worked up in stripes that grow with each new change in color. It’s a nice blanket, not only to keep cozy, but also to add a nice touch of color to your home.
I love how it turned out, but looking back I think it would also look nice to add a strong contrast, like a single row of black, in between each color change.
Another possibility would be to start the first color with two rows instead of only one. Then work the second color change for three rows instead of two, and so on until you have reached the desired length for the blanket.
The Stitches
This is an easy crochet pattern, which is worked in single crochet stitches only. (Here is a short tutorial on how to single crochet.) It is perfect for beginners who have mastered the basics of crochet and are ready for working with a chunky yarn and making color changes.
It is mindless and perfect for relaxing with only one-row repeat.
The Size
There is no stitch pattern, so you can easily crochet this to any width you like. The length is easy to adjust as well, but only as far as the last color block, which in this case is about 8.5 inches on the last block. With that said, you can make the color blocks bigger or smaller as well.
It’s a long and narrow throw, which is perfect for anyone who likes to stay cozy under a blanket while watching their favorite T.V. shows. For the couch, you really don’t want it too wide, but if you want to make this for a bed, then you will definitely want to increase the width a bit.

Another beauty of this bulky blanket is that it works up super quick, making it great for last-minute gift ideas for anyone on your list. I used Bernat Blanket, a super bulky polyester yarn with a 10 mm crochet hook.

- Yarn: Bernat Blanket (Super Bulky, #6; 100% Polyester; 10.5oz/300g; 220yds/201m) Color A (Cornflower): 3 balls; Color B (Shadow Purple): 3 balls; Color C (Purple Glow) 3 balls.
- Crochet Hook: 10mm
- Other: Measuring Tape, Scissors, Yarn Needle.
Measurements
- Gauge: 9 sts = 5"
- Finished Size: 48" wide by 64" long.
Abbreviations:
- CA = Color A – Cornflower
- CB = Color B – Shadow Purple
- CC = Color C – Purple Glow
- Ch/Chs = Chain/Chains
- Sc = Single Crochet
- St/Sts = Stitch/Stitches
Notes:
- To Change Colors: Change to new color in last stitch of previous color. Work stitch as normal until you have two loops on hook; drop the old color, yarn over with the new color and pull through both loops on hook. Cut old color and weave in. (To save time, crochet over the end for about 2-3" before weaving in with yarn needle.)
- With each new color change, you increase by one more row before making the next color change.
Instructions
- With CA, ch 88
- Row 1: Working into back bumps, sc in 2nd ch from hook and into each ch across to last ch; work last st as normal until you have two loops remaining on hook, wrap yarn over with new color and pull through. Turn. [87 sts]
- Pattern Row: Ch 1 (does not count as st), sc in first st and into each st across. Turn. [87 sts]
- Rows 2-3: Work 2 Rows with CB.
- Rows 4-6: Work 3 Rows with CC.
- Rows 7-10: Work 4 Rows with CA.
- Rows 11-15: Work 5 Rows with CB.
- Rows 16-21: Work 6 Rows with CC.
- Rows 22-28: Work 7 Rows with CA.
