Simple Triple Crochet Cowl

Free Crochet Pattern for an Oversized and Hooded Cowl.

This oversized cowl can be adjusted as needed in a simple multiple of two. I made mine wide so that it covers the head nicely. But if you like, you can just as easy omit a round or two for a narrow cowl.

The hooded cowl takes up a lot of yarn, but it’s super cozy, has a lot of drape and can be worn in different ways.

Can someone explain to me why round 1 has 200 stitches but round 2 has 400 stitches? Pattern is confusing — do we put 1 triple and 1 single in each stitch, or do we alternate?

Hi Laura, The stitches are doubled in round two because you are working the round on both sides of round 1. So normally when you join a round you make sure that everything is flat and that there are no twists… but in this pattern you make a twist (I like to call this a half twist, because I lay everything straight and then I flip one end over so that the bottom of the first stitch aligns with the top of the last stitch made). Then I join the round and begin crocheting…. and this “half” flip of the work allows you to crochet around both sides (the top and bottom) of the first round. Let me know if that helps or not.

So you alternate between putting a triple stitch in the top and a single stitch on the bottom? I’m just having a hard time visualizing this.

After. :) So it’s like 62″ around roughly.

Beautiful scarf. Thank you for sharing your pattern.

Quick question: should the triples in one row have a single above them in the next row? And the singles have triples above them?

The simple triple crochet cowl instructions row 1 has 200 stitches and row has 400 stitches. I can’t understand how to make the increase.

row 2 has 400 stitches. I meant to state rnds instead of rows.

So the increase happens because you make a twist in the chains and then work on both sides of the chains. It’s like a figure 8. I’ll try and do a tutorial on it soon. :)
