Tapestry Football Mat

At last, here is my pattern for a tapestry football mat. I know football season is almost over, but you might still have time to make one. And if it’s too late, you can always make it for the next season.

Tapestry crochet is actually quite easy. The only thing that might complicate things is the idea of working with more than one color yarn. However, once you do a few rows of that, it actually becomes very easy.

For this crochet football mat, I used Red Heart Comfort yarn. It is a thicker worsted weight yarn, and is readily available at most Walmart stores.

I used two strands, so you not only get a nice thick mat, but it also helps for it to work up faster.

Notes

  • The mat is crocheted by working two strands of yarn as one strand.
  • Each block on the graph represents 1 sc.
  • The checkered area on the graph indicates the edging rows and is to be ignored.

Instructions

  • With CA ch 68,
  • Row 1: With CA sc in 2nd ch from hk and in next 29 chs, with CB sc in next 7 chs, with CA sc in next 30 chs. Turn. (67 sc sts)
  • Rows 2-39: Ch 1 at beg of each row and sc across changing the colors as indicated by the chart. You can carry the extra colors, or drop them and pick them up again once you get to them. I did not carry CA in any areas, instead I worked with a separate strand on each end of the mat. I carried CB in all areas over CC but not over CA. And as for, CC I worked with three strands of yarn; one for each end and one for the center; which enabled me to drop that as well when not needed.

Edging:

  • Rnd 1: Attach CA to any st along the edge, ch 1, sc evenly around working 3 sc into each corner; join with sl st.
  • Rnds 2-5: Ch 1, sc evenly around working 3 sc into each corner st; join with sl st. FO at last rnd.
