Mesh Picot Cowl ~ FREE Crochet Pattern

Mesh Picot Cowl ~ FREE Crochet Pattern

This gorgeous cowl is perfect for dressing up or down. It features a simple mesh with a lovely picot edging to give it a bit of lace. It’s a mindless pattern once you get going on it, and it works up super quick! So you still have time to crochet this up for your new year’s celebrations.

As with most of my cowls, it’s designed for a nice cozy fit on me, which means the pattern will be cozy for teens or small adults. With that said, the stitch pattern is a simple multiple of two, which makes it super easy to crochet this to any size that you want.

And best of all, if making it in the size as shown, you only need one skein of yarn. I didn’t use up the whole skein, but I would recommend to get two skeins if making it larger… just to be on the safe side.

Pattern Information:

Skill Level: Easy/Intermediate

Materials:
Yarn: Loops & Threads Impeccable (#4)
Crochet Hook: I/9-5.50mm

Gauge: 4″ over 5 stitch repeats (sc, ch 2)

Finished Size: 20.5″ by 6.5″ Laying Flat

Abbreviations:

Ch/Chs = Chain/Chains
Sc = Single Crochet
Sl St = Slip Stitch
Sp/Sps = Space/Spaces

Note: My starting chains were made looser than the chains made in Rnds 1-19. Hence I achieved that beautiful lace underneath the picots. Then in Rnd 20 I once again made the chains a bit bigger to give it a more luxurious lace around the edge. I recommend switching to a larger hook (a J/6.00mm) for the starting chains and for Rnd 20. However, switching hooks is optional as the edge comes out slightly ruffled; but still nice.

Pattern Instructions:

(Optional: Use J hook) Ch 162 (or any multiple of 3); join with sl st to first ch being careful not to twist chs.

Rnd 1: With I hook: Ch 1, (sc, ch 2) in same ch as join, *skip next 2 chs, (sc, ch 2) in next ch; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc. (54 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 2: Sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 1, (sc, ch 2) in same sp and into each ch-2 sp around; join with sl st in first sc. (54 ch-2 sps)

Rnds 3-20: Repeat Rnd 2. If you used a J hook for the starting chs, switch to J hook for Rnd 20 only.

Rnd 21: With I hook: Sl st into ch-2 sp, *ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sl st in third ch from hook, sc) into same sp and into each sp around; join with sl st in first sc. (54 picots) Fasten Off.

Join yarn to any ch-2 sp (preferably at seam) on opposite side of cowl, and repeat Rnd 21 from *.
