5″ Easy Crochet Square

With lots of open spaces, this easy crochet square works up quick and is perfect for a summer afghan. You have the option to make this in one or two colors. Or, use up you yarn stash and choose a new color for each round for a super colorful look!

You could also use this for a cute children’s bag, a beach bag or anything else you like.

As for yarn, I chose Red Heart Comfort, which is on the thicker side of the #4 worsted weight yarns. If you find that your square is coming out under 5″, you could always add another round of single or double crochets.

Skill Level: Easy

Materials:
Yarn: Red Heart Comfort – Worsted Weight #4 (1-2 colors)
Crochet Hook: H/8-5.00mm

Finished Size: 5″ across.

Abbreviations:

Ch/Chs = Chain/Chains
Dc = Double Crochet
Rep = Repeat
Sk = Skip
Sl St = Slip Stitch
Sp/Sps = Space/Spaces
St/Sts = Stitch/Stitches

Notes:

Change color after each round if desired.

Join new color in joining slip stitch of previous round.

Pattern Instructions:

Ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc, now and throughout) (dc, ch 2) into ring, [(2 dc, ch 2) into ring] 3 times; join with sl st in first dc (3rd ch). [8 dc and 4 ch-2 sps]

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sk st where join was made, *sc in sp before next dc, 7 dc in ch-2 sp, sk next dc; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc. [4 sc and 28 dc]

Rnd 3: Ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch-2 sp), (dc, ch 2) in same st as join; *sk next 3 sts, (dc, ch 2) twice in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in first dc (3rd ch). [16 dc and 16 ch-2 sps]

Rnd 4: Sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 3, work another 2 dc in same sp, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, *7 dc in next ch-2 sp, [3 dc in next ch-2 sp] 3 times; rep from * 2 times, *7 dc in next ch-2 sp, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp; join with sl st in first dc (3rd ch). [64 sts] Fasten Off.
