The Size

The finished size measures 4″ across; for children this  might be a bit too wide, so you could switch to a thinner yarn and smaller hook if want.

As for the length you simply continue in pattern until you reach the length that you want. This crochet ear warmer size chart can help as a reference, especially in times when you are unable to measurements of the recipient’s head circumference..

The Yarn

I chose Red Heart Comfort yarn. It is an aran #4 worsted weight yarn. The yarn works great for this stitch and gives you a nice texture and stretch. And what’s best about this yarn is that it gets softer with each wash!

If you are making this for children and need a narrower ear warmer you can try a dk weight to keep the pretty ribs while narrowing it down a bit. Red Heart even has a dk weight version of the comfort, so that is a good place to start.

How it’s Made

The pretty ribbing is created simply with front and back post crochet stitches. The ear warmer pattern is worked across the short rows alternating between the stitches to keep the ribs on the front side of the fabric.

Once the desired circumference is reached you can join the last row to the first row. You can slip stitch across, but for a more professional look, you will want to use a tapestry needle and sew the ends.

The free crochet pattern is perfect for beginners who have learned the basics and are ready for the next step in crochet.
