Crochet Ear Warmer – Popcorn Diamonds

This crochet ear warmer pattern features a lovely popcorn diamond design that you will enjoy wearing throughout the cold seasons. It is a nice alternative to a hat and can be worn as is in moderate temperatures, and underneath a winter hood when it temperatures drop to extreme levels.

You can also wear this as a headband to hold your hair in place. Whether you like to wear your hair down or in messy buns, this ear warmer headband is just what you need.

You can make this with leftover yarns as part of a winter accessories gift basket or a stocking stuffer.

Finished Size

The free crochet pattern is given in one size to fit a small adult. If you need a different size you can increase or decrease the circumference by 3.5 inches per size. That way you can maintain the stitch pattern throughout without modification.

If that still doesn’t do it to get the size you need, try using a different-sized yarn and crochet hook. For kids I would try going down a size, and for grownups who are okay with a wider band, you could try going with a thicker yarn.

You can refer to this crochet ear warmer size chart.

The Yarn

I used Patons Canadiana, a medium worsted weight yarn. However, any stretchy yarn will work. Vanna’s Choice, and other similar yarns by Lion Brand would work if making this for adults.

If you need to make a substitution for kids, try a soft DK weight yarn like Paton’s Astra maybe. I’ve not tried it, so if you do, I would love to hear your feed back.

The Stitch Pattern

The crochet stitches are basic. Even the popcorn stitch is worked with basic stitches and could be mastered by bold beginners, ready for their next challenge. Aside from the popcorn, the only other stitches you need to know are the single and double crochet stitches.

If you find that the popcorn “pop” out too much, you can try making the popcorn with only three double crochets instead of five.
