Summer is just around the corner, and these crochet summer hat patterns are just what you need to help you get ready for the warmer days. The collection features various designers from around the web.
Most of these free crochet sun hat patterns are for women, but you’ll also find a few for children as well.
A Few Tips for Crocheting Summer Hats
Use a Cotton Yarn. Summer hats are meant to protect your eyes and face from the bright summer sun. Thus, you want to allow your head to breathe through the hat, and thereby eliminate excessive heat. Cotton and a few other natural fibers are designed to allow for easy breathing to help keep you cool.
Even if it’s a worsted weight yarn, as long as it is a natural fiber, it’ll help to keep you cool.
Make Your Hat Approximately the Same Size as Your Head’s Circumference. If you’re making caps or hats with brims you want to eliminate any stretch because this will cause the brim to become distorted. You can always add a band or an elastic on the inside of the hat to help keep it in place.
If you need to make adjustments to a size, this crochet hat size chart may be of help.
Choose an Open Stitch Pattern. If you live in a rather hot climate your best bet is to choose a pattern that features an open stitch design for the main part of the hat. The brim should still be a solid stitch, but for the rest of the hat, an open stitch pattern will help to prevent overheating.
So without further ado, here are the free crochet patterns!
Toddler Cotton Sun Hat by My Hobby is Crochet
This adorable hat pattern can be worn several ways. I love how the brim is rolled up at the back here, but you can also roll the entire brim up if you like. It’s shown here with a pretty flower applique for a girl. For a boy, add a different applique or leave it off altogether.
Shine on Sun Hat by Jessie At Home
This is one of my favorite sun hats around the web. It’s got an elegant style that will go great with any summer dress. And the brim is wide enough to protect your entire face and neck.
Blossom Stitch Crochet Cap
The blossom cap is my personal favorite here on CrochetN’Crafts. It has a bit of openess to allow your head to breathe while protecting your eyes with a solid brim. The pattern is available in one size only.
Honeysuckle by ELK Studio
Not only is this one perfect for keeping you cool, but it’s also a great way to add a bit of color into your summer fun-filled days. The pattern is available in two adult sizes.
Summer Joy by Pattern Paradise
This is one of my personal favorites around the web. I love the pretty “ribbon” and the flower. As for the brim it looks like the perfect size for protecting your entire face.
Crochet Visor by CrochetNCrafts
This visor was one of the first patterns to be published on this site. The visor is crocheted in acrylic yarn here, but for a much cooler visor, why not try a worsted weight cotton such as Bernat Handicrafter.
