ESC Dishcloth
The open stitch extended single crochet dishcloth pattern has a nice drape due to the chain one spaces. It works up quick and easy, and features a pretty scalloped edge, which makes it perfect for gifting. And because it works up so quick, this would also make for a nice pattern to make for craft fairs.
Because of it’s nice drape, this will become a favorite in the kitchen for washing dishes, but you can use it throughout the home, including the bath.
The Stitch Pattern
The extended single crochet is one of my favorite stitches. It is slightly higher than the single crochet. It’s looser, which makes it great for a dishcloth. Then combine that with a chain one space and you have a nice loose fabric for washing and scrubbing your entire home.
Best of all, the stitch is beginner friendly!
The Yarn
A cotton yarn is a must if you plan on using this in the kitchen or for cleaning around the home. If you plan to use it in the tub, then you could get away with an acrylic or whatever else you have in mind.
My go-to dishcloth cotton is Bernat Handicrafter, but there are many others available as well. Red Heart and Lion Brand also carry some fabulous dishcloth cottons. The reason for these cottons is that they are more effective when it comes to scrubbing, and they also hold up better.
The Size
Adjust the size as needed by making your starting chains in any multiple of two. The size given is for a 7.25 inch cloth. But you can not only adjust that for a dishcloth, but for a coaster, placemat or a table runner as well!

Special Stitch Instructions
- Extended Single Crochet (ESC): Insert hk in st/ch indicated, yo and pull up a lp, yo and pull through 1 lp, yo and pull through both lps on hk.

- Last chain made in the row counts as the turning chain.
Instructions
- Ch 24,
- Row 1: (Esc, ch 1) in 2nd ch from hk, *sk next ch, (esc, ch 1) in next ch; rep from * across. Turn. [12 esc]
- Row 2: (Esc, ch 1) in first esc and into each esc across. Turn. [12 esc]
- Rows 3-16: Rep row 2. Do not FO, continue with Edging.
Edging:
- Rnd 1: Sc evenly around working 3 sc into each corner, making sure to end with an even number of stitches. Join with sl st in first sc.
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, (esc, ch 1) in same st as join, sl st in next st, *(esc, ch 1) in next st, sl st in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in first esc. FO.
