Extended Single Crochet Cap

This extended single crochet cap pattern is worked in the extended single crochet up until the brim. It’s a nice texture that is perfect for both men and women. With that said, the pattern is given in a women’s size.

The great thing about this hat is that it can be worn throughout the seasons with minor changes as to how to work the pattern. As is, the cap is perfect for the winter as it’ll keep your ears and forehead cozy while also keeping the sun out of your eyes. For a winter hat you could leave the brim off if you’d like.

And if you plan on wearing this in the summer you could choose a cotton and shorten the length a bit.

How it’s Made

This crochet cap is started in rounds at the crown and worked down in one piece until you get to the brim. The stitch used for the hat is the extended single crochet, which is very similar to the single crochet, but with a slight increase in height.

The brim is worked in short rows. Then as a final touch you reverse single crochet all the way around the brim and cap.

The Yarn

I used Vanna’s Choice because it results in a nice stretchy material. But any similar yarn that meets the gauge will work.

The Size

The size is given to fit a women’s small. However, if you don’t mind leaving the brim off, the beanie itself is very easy to adjust to any size you want. Here is a Crochet Hat Size Chart by Age to use as a guide when adjusting the size.

  1. I would love to make a felted version of the ESC Cap! Anyone know how to figure what the increases would be? Or maybe a similar pattern already written for felting?
