Crochet Hat and Cowl Set – Intermittent Crossed Half Double
This crochet hat and cowl set is easy to crochet to any size that you need from toddler to adult sizes.
Here is my collection of free crochet hat patterns for adults as well as a few for babies and children. Currently you have over 60 patterns to choose from. Most of them are for the winter to keep you warm, but there are also a few brim hats for the summer.
Crocheted hats make for great gift ideas, and can be paired with a cowl, a pair of fingerless gloves or even a pair of boot cuffs to make a complete set.
All free crochet patterns are written in US terms.
Many of these crochet hats are given in an adult small, but can be adjusted for any size as needed for newborns to extra large adult size.
Hats that are started at the crown can be difficult to measure for the correct size prior to finishing. Luckily we have a formula! I go into full details of how it works in this Crochet Hat Size Chart.
Crochet hats that are started at the brim are easier to adjust to a different size as you can simply slip the first few rounds of the hat over the head to determine whether or not the fit is comfortable.
To make that even easier, a lot of my hats that are started at the brim, are started with a narrow strip of ribbing that is made simply by crocheting into the back loops only. The strip is worked in short rows until you have reached a desired circumference. Once you have the circumference needed, the strip is joined together along the short ends with a slip stitch. You then begin to work in rounds for the body of that.
It truly does not get any easier that than when it comes to making adjustments to the size.
A lot of my hat patterns are worked in Red Heart Super Saver. Although this yarn is great for hats, I’ve found Vanna’s Choice gives you even more stretch than the super saver. So if you can get the gauge to match, or if the size is easy to customize, go for it! Or, use any other worsted weight yarn that you like.
Another thing about crocheted hats is that they are not as warm as most of the winter hats that you can purchase in the stores. To add more warmth to them you can line the inside with a warm and stretchy materials. Jersey knits or even a fleece are two good options. Fleece is not as stretchy, but it can work for beanies that come down on your forehead.
Add a Pom Pom. Any hat that is gathered at the top would look good with a pom pom attached to it. You can purchase a faux fur pom pom, or, make your own by following this tutorial: How to Make a Pom Pom.
Add Appliques. Add your favorite appliques along the brim of your hat. Flowers are perfect for the spring weather, while a few orange and yellow eaves pinned together would look lovely for the fall. As for Christmas you could try a candy cane or any other applique that you like. You get the idea!
Add Stripes. If you have a lot of leftover yarns, crochet hats are the perfect way to clean up that yarn! You can make a hat stand out with as little as one or two rounds of a different color worked near or around the brim of the hat.
