Slippery Surface Crochet Ear Warmer Headband

This crochet ear warmer headband is crocheted in the back loops in single crochet stitches. Then for the raised textures, I surface crocheted in between the stitches of each round. It’s rather time consuming, but it results in a super cozy warmer for the cold winter weather.

Although an easy pattern, I find it a bit of a challenge to keep the surface crochet stitches loose to allow for a good stretch. But after raveling a few times and testing out the stretch, I was good to go.

The pattern is given in a XS or even child-size, but you can easily adjust this to any size you need. You can also make a headband by doing fewer rounds.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials:
Yarn: Vanna’s Choice (Worsted Weight (#4) 100% acrylic, 3.5 oz/100 g – 170 yds/156 m) – 2 Colors of your choice
Crochet Hook: I 5.50mm and K 6.50mm

Gauge: Measures approximately 2″ across 7 sts.

Finished Size: Laying flat it measures approximately 8.5″ across and 3.75″ wide after surface crochets have been made. It is easy to customize to any circumference you need.

Notes:

When working the surface crochet stitches, make sure to keep them loose to allow for the ear warmer to remain stretchy. The surface crochet stitches can also shrink the fabric if they are too tight.

Surface crochets are worked into the posts of the stitches, and not into the front loops. (Front loops are left unworked to add more texture on Right Side of fabric.)

Refer to this tutorial by Moogly on how to do the Surface Crochet.

To make the invisible join, fasten off after last surface crochet has been made. Thread tail end of yarn onto yarn needle and weave it under both loops of first surface crochet in the round. Bring your needle back and insert in the middle of last surface crochet keeping your tension the same as the surface crochets. Weave tail end in on wrong side to secure. Refer to this tutorial on the Invisible Join.

Rnds 2-12: With CA, Ch 1, blsc in same st as join and into each st around; join with sl st in first blsc. [60 sts] FO.

With CB and K hk, work 1 surface crochet in between each sc made in Rnd 1. Work another surface crochet into the joining sl st of Rnd 1. FO and join the rnd with an invisible join. You should have the appearance of 62 chs (surface crochets).

Continue to surface crochet in between the sts for the remainder of Rnds, making sure to keep the surface crochets loose.
