Cross Over Long DC Crochet Twisted Ear Warmer Pattern

This crochet twisted ear warmer pattern is worked up in the cross-over long double crochet stitch. It is a very simple cable stitch that looks great for a simple ear warmer like this.

The stitch is fairly solid, making this a nice alternative to a hat, even in cold winter weather. If you find it isn’t enough you can wear it under a hooded jacket or a hooded cowl.

If you want to add a bit more color, you could work with two colors changing back and forth after each row.

The Size

The finished size is given to fit an adult large. However, it can be adjusted as needed in the multiple provided for the starting chains. Use this ear warmer size chart as a reference. Just remember that you’re making a twist to complete the band and as a result, will need to add an additional 1-2 inches to the length before joining.

The Yarn

For this crochet ear warmer I used Vanna’s Choice, a medium-weight acrylic yarn. I like the yarn because it gives you a nice stretchy material. Pound of Love and other similar yarns can be substituted if you want.

The Stitch Pattern

The pattern is worked over two rows, with one row worked in simple single crochets while the next is worked in the cross-over stitch. To make the cross-over stitch, skip a stitch, then work three half double crochets. Then backtrack and double crochet into the skipped stitch.

Step 1

To sew the twist, fold the band lengthwise with the Right Sides together and the Wrong Sides facing the outside.

Step 2

Layer the band as shown so that the edges overlap from the center. You can place your stitch markers in the middle if you like. I just eyeballed it, because you can adjust it in Step 5 as needed.

Step 3

Then fold one end over the other as shown below.

Step 4

Next, fold the second end over so that the ends interlock.

Step 5

You should have four layers. Make adjustments as needed to make sure everything is centered evenly.

Step 6

With your tail end of the yarn, and using a tapestry needle, sew across making sure to go through all four layers.

Step 7

Turn right side out to hide the seam. Easy Peasy!!!
