Materials

  • Yarn: Loops and Threads Charisma (Bulky Weight, #5; 100% Acrylic; 109 yds/3.5; 100m/100g) CA = Charcoal, 2 balls; CB = White, 1 ball.
  • Crochet Hook: 8 mm
  • Other: 16″ pillow form, Zipper.
  • Tools: Measuring Tape, Scissors, Yarn Needle, Sewing Needle, Sewing Thread.

Measurements

  • Gauge: 8 sts = 4″.
  • Finished Size: 16″ by 16″.

  • Hdc = Half Double Crochet

Notes

This pillow is worked in one panel, which is folded and joined together at the two sides. The mattress stitch is a good choice for an invisible seam.

For easy removal of this pillow cover, insert a zipper at the bottom, connecting the first and last rows.

The color sequence begins and ends with the charcoal. This gives you a solid color at the bottom to help hide a zipper.

Chunky Crochet Pillow Pattern Instructions

Leaving a 30-50″ tail, ch 33, or any multiple of 3.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and into each ch across. Turn. [32 sts]

Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, hdc in first st, sk next st, v-st in next st, *sk next 2 sts, v-st in next st; rep from * across to last 2 sts, sk next st, hdc in last st. Turn. [10 v-sts]

Row 3: Ch 3 (does not count as st), tr in first st, 3 tr in first v-st and into each v-st across. Tr in last st, changing to the new color at the last yarn over. Turn. [32 sts]

Rows 4-31: Rep Rows 2 & 3, omitting color change at Row 31.

Row 32: Ch 1, sc in first st and into each st across. Fasten Off, leaving a 30-50″ tail for sewing along the one side.

Construction

Fold the pillowcase in half and sew along the sides using a mattress stitch.

At the bottom, insert a zipper. Pin the zipper in place so the ends are tucked inside the pillowcase. Handsew it in place, making sure to keep the edges even. You may also wish to add a liner for the pillow. This bag liner tutorial might help here as well.
