Jacob’s Ladder Popcorn Hat

The Jacob’s Ladder Popcorn Hat pattern features the Jacob’s ladder stitch with rows of popcorns. It’s a beautifully textured and cozy winter hat.

It’s shown in one color, but you could experiment with different colors. One would be to work it in stripes, and another would be to work the popcorns or Jacob’s ladder chains in a different color from the rest of the round using the Tapestry technique for changing colors.

Finished Size

The finished size is given to fit the average adult, medium to large. You can try and change up your yarn and crochet hook sizes if you need a different size.

The crown is more difficult to measure on this hat because of the jacob’s ladder. However, you can pull the Jacob’s Ladder loops premature just to see where the crown measurement falls. Then refer to this crochet hat size chart and stop your increasing or continue with more increases in the pattern as established.

Just know that increasing or decreasing will change the look of this hat pattern.

Working an extra round of increases shouldn’t make a huge difference, but if you need to decrease for a child or baby, it might be best to make those decreases in the second round.

As is, you have 6 columns of popcorns and 6 columns of the Jacob’s ladder cables. Round 2 sets the stage as to how many columns you will have.

As is, you have 24 stitches in Round 2. You can easily work the round so you only have 20 stitches or 16 stitches to give you fewer columns of popcorns. And that would give you the same pattern, but with fewer columns.

Hopefully one day I will have the time to write this out in more sizes… until then, hopefully the above will work okay.

The Yarn

I used Patons Canadiana yarn. It is a soft, medium worsted weight acrylic yarn. It is one of my personal favorites for hats and scarves because it is so super soft and wonderful to work with!

You can substitute with other yarns, but the size may come out different.
