Puffy Spike Stitch Christmas Crochet Scarf

Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials

  • Yarn: Caron Simply Soft  (Worsted Weight, #4; 100% acrylic; 6 oz/170.1g; 315yds/288m) 3 Colors – 1 ball of each color.
  • Crochet Hook: H/8-5.00mm
  • Other: Measuring Tape, Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Markers.

Measurements

  • Gauge: 16 sts = 4″.
  • Finished Size: 8.5″ wide by 72″ long.

Abbreviations

  • Ch/Chs = Chain/Chains
  • Hk = Hook
  • Lp/Lps = Loop/Loops
  • PSS = Puffy Spike Stitch
  • Rep = Repeat
  • RS = Right Side
  • Sc = Single Crochet
  • Sk = Skip
  • St/Sts = Stitch/Stitches
  • YO = Yarn Over

Special Stitch Instructions

Before making the puffy spike stitch, skip a stitch, and place a stitch marker into the next stitch. The skipped stitch is where the puffy spike stitch falls, but is not worked into. The marked stitch is where the next single crochet is placed after making the puffy spike stitch. Without a marker, it is difficult to find the stitch.

Puffy Spike Stitch (PSS): Yo, insert hk 3 sts to the right and 1 row down, yo and pull through (3 lps on hk); yo, insert hk 2 sts to the right and 2 rows down, yo and pull through; yo, insert hk 1 st to the right and 3 rows down, yo and pull through; yo, insert hk in st below and 4 rows down, yo and pull through; yo, insert hk 1 st to the left and 3 rows down, yo and pull through, yo, insert hk 2 sts to the left and 2 rows down, yo and pull through, yo, insert hk 3 sts to the left and 1 row down; yo and pull through; (15 lps on hk) yo and pull through all 15 lps, ch 1 to close the st. 

Note: The closing chain 1 does not count as a stitch. Skip the chain when working the next row.

Changing Colors

Use at least two colors and change color after every six rows.

To Change Color: Work the stitch in the previous row as normal until the last step and you have two loops left on hook; drop the old color, pick up the new color and draw through both loops to complete the stitch. Fasten Off the old color.

Color Sequence: I started with green, then red, and white.

Puffy Spike Stitch Crochet Scarf Pattern Instructions

With the first color, Ch 34, or any multiple of 11 + 1.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hk and into each ch across. Turn. [33 sts]

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc and into each sc across. Turn.[33 sts]

Rows 3-6: Rep Row 2. [33 sts]

Row 7 (RS): With next color, ch 1, sc in first 5 sc, *work pss, sk sc behind pss, sc in next 10 sc; rep from * across to last 6 sc; work pss, sk sc behind pss, sc in last 5 sc. Turn. [33 sts]

Rows 8-12: Rep Row 2.

Rows 13-330: Rep Rows 7-12. Fasten Off.
