Fan Dishcloth
The fan dishcloth pattern is worked up in a version of the fan stitch. It has a simple edging and can be worked up with only a small amount of yarn.
A little lace and a lot of scrubbing action is what you’ll get with this dishcloth. It’s got a single ridge around at the back to help catch more debris from your dirty pots and pans. And what’s even better is that you can increase the foundation to any multiple of 6 + 2, making it easy to crochet up a matching placemat as well.
The finished size of this dishcloth only measures 7.5″ by 8″. It’s a good size for me, but some of you might want to add in a few extra starting chains to make it a big bigger.
The pretty lace and texture in this cloth make it perfect to go in a housewarming gift basket.
About the Yarn
You will need a dishcloth cotton yarn to make this because dishcloth cotton is designed to be tough and hold up to a lot of scrubbing. I used Bernat Handicrafter, which is a medium #4 worsted weight cotton.
Other brands like Lily Sugar ‘n’ Cream, Red Heart and Lion Brand also carry good cottons that you can use for this.

Special Stitch Instructions
- V-St: (Dc, ch 3, dc) in st indicated.
- Fpedc: Yo, insert around post indicated, yo and pull through (3 lps on hk), yo and pull through 1 lp, (yo, pull through 2 lps) twice.
Instructions
- Ch 20 or any multiple of 6 + 2.
- Row 1: Sc 2nd ch from hk, *sk next 2 chs, 5 dc in next ch, sk next 2 chs, sc in next ch, rep from * to end. (19 sts) Turn.
- Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch-1), dc in same first st (small V-st made), sk next 2 sts, sc in next dc (center dc), *sk next 2 sts, V-st in next sc, sk next 2 sts, sc in next dc; rep from * to last 3 sts; sk next 2 sts, (dc, ch 1, dc) in last sc (small V-st made). (2 V-Sts (ch-3 sps) and 2 small V-sts) Turn.
- Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same first st, sc in next sc, *5 dc in center ch of V-st, sc in next sc, rep from * to small V-st, sk next dc and ch-1, work 3 dc in last st (3rd ch). (19 sts) Turn.
- Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, work V-St in next sc, *sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc, sk next 2 dc, V-St in next sc, rep from * to last 3 sts, sk next 2 dc, sc in last st. (3 V-Sts) Turn.
- Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first st, *5 dc in center ch of V-St, sc in next sc, rep from * to end. (19 sts) Turn.
- Rows 6-11: Repeat rows 2-5 ending row 11 with row 3. Do not fasten off or turn at last row, but continue with edging.
Edging:
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around working 3 sc into each corner; join with sl st in first sc.
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, fpedc evenly around working 3 fpedc in each corner; join with sl st in first fpedc.
- Rnd 3: Same as round 1. Fasten Off.
I know this is being offered as a dishcloth,,,, I plan to use it as a face cloth,,, its so feminine!!!
