Another Bullion Stitch Cowl

Here is another version of a bullion stitch cowl. This one is more of an open stitch, making it great for spring and fall weather. The stitch pattern is an easy multiple of two, so you can easily adjust this to any size from toddler to adult.

The cowl is shown here short, but the pattern provides instructions to make this into a long cowl scarf as well. With a long version you can wrap it twice for a cozy winter cowl if you like.

Skill Level

Materials

  • Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver (Worsted Weight (#4) 100% acrylic, 7 oz/198g – 364 yds/333m) – 1 Skein
  • Crochet Hook: I/9-5.50mm
  • Other: Measuring Tape, Scissors, Yarn Needle.

Measurements

  • Gauge: 3" over 9 sc.
  • Finished Size for Short Cowl: 8" wide by 13.5" long, laying flat.
  • Finished Size for Long Cowl: 6" wide by 30" long, laying flat.

Special Stitch Instructions

  • Standing Bullion Stitch: Make a slip knot and place it on your hook. Then follow instructions for regular bullion stitch.
  • Bullion St: YO 6 times, insert hk into designated st, yo and pull through (8 lps on hk), yo and pull through all lps on hk.

Notes

  • This pattern is fastened off prior to each round with the bullion stitches. This way you can start the bullion stitch rounds with a standing stitch for a cleaner seam.
  • Pattern instructions are given for the small cowl, with special instructions for a longer scarf in parentheses.

Instructions

  • Ch 80, (180), or any multiple of 2. Join with sl st in first ch being careful not to twist chs.
  • Rnd 1: Ch 1, working into back bumps, sc in same ch as join and into each ch around; join with sl st in first sc. FO. [80, (180) sts]
  • Rnd 2: Work a standing bullion st in same st as joining sl st; ch 1, *sk next st, (bullion st, ch 1) in next st; rep from * around to last st; sk last st, join with sl st in first bullion st. [40, (90) bullion sts]
  • Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc into same st as join and into each st and ch-1 around; join with sl st in first sc. [80, (180) sts] FO.
  • Rnds 4-15, (13): Rep rnds 2 & 3 until you have reached a desired width. FO.
