Beginner Chain Stitch Hooded Scarf
Here is another free pattern for a crochet hooded scarf. My goal was to create another beginner crochet pattern, but I had no idea the scarf would turn out this nice. I just love the texture the chains and single crochet stitches create. I’ll have to do more experimenting with this stitch pattern.
You can wear this scarf over a long-sleeved shit instead of a spring or fall jacket. Or, wear it underneath a winter jacket for extra warmth. It’s especially fitting for a jacket that doesn’t have a hood.
How It’s Made
This hooded scarf is crocheted in two pieces, the scarf and the hood. Then the two pieces are sewn together using the mattress stitch.
The stitch pattern is super easy and mindless with only the single crochets and chain spaces. It’s the perfect pattern for in front of the T.V. or while chatting with friends.
The Size
The size is given for an adult small, but in a multiple of four plus two, you can easily adjust this to any size you need from child to adult large.
The Yarn
Another thing that adds to the beauty and luxury of this scarf is the fact that I used Patons Canadiana yarn. The yarn is nice and soft, easy to work with and creates a nice stretchy fabric. It is a bit more pricey than some other yarns, but the extra price is absolutely worth it. Patons Canadiana also results in a beautiful drape, which makes it perfect for these hooded scarves.
Work it up in a solid color as shown or in a striped design using leftover yarns.

Materials
- Yarn: Patons Canadiana – The New Generation (2 3.5oz/100g balls) I pretty much used up both balls; one for the scarf and one for the hood.
- Crochet Hook: H/8-5.00MM
- Other: Measuring Tape, Scissors, Yarn Needle.
Measurements
- Gauge: Measures 4"/10cm over 12 chs and 5 sc sts, and over 16 rows. However, the gauge is not that important.
- Finished Size: You can make it any size that you want. The scarf pictured measures about 5" wide and 52" long. And when laying flat, the hood measures about 11" from the top down.
Abbreviations
- RS = Right Side
- WS = Wrong Side
- Ch/Chs = Chain/Chains
- Sc = Single Crochet
- Sk = Skip
- St/Sts = Stitch/Stitches
Notes
- The Scarf: The scarf is worked lengthwise, but you could also work it across.
- The Hood: The hood is done with the same stitch pattern as the scarf. To determine the number of chains to start with, refer to the gauge and the measurement over the head from shoulder to shoulder.
- To take the measurement, measure from one shoulder and over the head to the next shoulder. As for the measurement from the front to back, measure along the side, from the front of the head to the center back of the head.
- Right Sides and Wrong Sides: The right side and wrong sides are not that much different from each other. The only thing that will differ is the final edge, which should end at an uneven row in order to match the first row.
Instructions
- Ch any multiple of 4 plus 2. I chained 222 for the scarf and 102 for the hood.
- Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 3, sk next 3 chs, sc in next ch, repeat from * to end of row. Turn.
- Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in first st, *ch 3, sk next 3 chs, sc in next st, repeat from * to end of row. Turn.
- Repeat row 2 until you have reached a desired width, ending with an uneven row. Fasten off. When fastening off for the hood, leave a long enough tail for sewing the hood.
To Assemble the Hooded Scarf
- To sew the hood seam, fold the hood so that the right sides are facing each other, and then sew the last row together. The mattress seam is a good seam to use here.
- Next, with the wrong sides facing, fold the scarf in half. Then with the right side turned in, take the hood and slide it over the scarf so that the edges and the center of the hood are lined up with the scarf. The right sides of the scarf and hood should face each other. Pin and sew together.
To Block the Seams
- Lay the seams in between two damp towels and allow to dry.

This is very pretty, and I would like to attempt it, but I am confused as to the folding instructions when assembling the hood. Any help would be appreciated. Is there a video showing the assembly of the hood?

Sorry, there is no video. Basically you mark the last row and the right side of the hood. Then fold it so the right sides are on the inside and the last row aligns. You will then sew the seam along the last row. This seam falls at the back of the hood.
Then you fold the scarf in half with the right sides facing out. Slip the scarf into the hood as shown in the bottom picture. The right side of the scarf and hood are touching. Then sew the scarf to the bottom of the hood. The seam falls on the wrong side of both the hood and scarf. Hope that helps, but let me know.
Why do you make two separate chains? It seems it’s made as one piece.
After the hood and scarf are made they are sewn together.
Can one simply fold the cart in half, sew a seam for the correct length to fit the head ….won’t this work?
It might work, but it’s not how this one is designed.
