Interlocked Free Crochet Market Bag Pattern

Here is a free crochet market bag pattern to help save the environment. Plus, it is economical. With the price of grocery bags these days you’ll have your cost of yarn back in no time.

When I first crocheted this market bag I was a bit iffy on it because it stretched down to the ground when I used it to carry some fruits on one of my walks.

I was just going to rip it out and forget about it… but before I did that, I packed it full of boxes and realized it was the best market bag I ever carried around. It still stretches a lot, but when you pack it full with boxes it stretches out width-wise rather than length-wise. So that worked out well, and I decided it was a go after all.

It folds down nicely, making it easy to take along anywhere. And best of all, it holds about the same amount of groceries as a plastic grocery bag, yet it’s way more secure and durable!

Finished Size

It measures roughly 11″x11″ not counting handles. You can increase or decrease the size by adjusting the diameter of the bag. See note within the pattern regarding stitch counts for adjusting the size.

The Yarn

I used an acrylic worsted weight yarn, called Impeccable by Loops and Threads. It’s a nice strong yarn, but a cotton yarn might make it even stronger.

I used two colors for a pretty color design, but choose more for stripes or even a solid color if you like.

How It’s Made

This crochet bag pattern is worked in one piece from the bottom up. The bottom is worked in half double crochet stitches until you reach the diameter that you want.

Then you begin the body of the bag with interlocked stitches. It’s a unique technique, perfect for market bags.

Once you get to the height that you want you begin your handles. they are shown short on my bag, but you can easily adjust them if you need longer handles.

Leave the crochet tote bag as is if you plan on using it as a market bag or a beach bag. However, if you want to use it for other things you can easily add a lining on the inside to make it secure and even more durable. How to Line a Crochet Bag.
