6.5″ Crochet Afghan Square

Use this simple crochet afghan square to clean up your yarn stash. It has a simple lace that you can work up in a solid color as shown. Or, work it up in several colors for a pretty and color design. Same thing goes for when you go to make a blanket with it. You can work all squares in the same color(s), or mix and match the colors of the squares. Whatever you decide, I’m sure your blanket will turn out beautiful!

Not only is this perfect for blankets but you could also piece this together for a pillow to match, a bag, or maybe even a creative table runner!

About the Yarn

For this square I used Vanna’s Choice, a medium worsted weight yarn. It is 100% acrylic, but one of the most luxurious acrylics that I have ever met. I find this yarn to be soft and stretchy, making it perfect even for baby projects.

Yarn Substitutions

  • Bernat Pop!
  • Bernat Super Value
  • Caron One Pound
  • Lion Brand Heartland
  • Patons Canadiana
  • Red Heart Super Saver
  • Red Heart With Love

Those are just a few suggestions as you can basically use just about any yarn that you have on hand. Just keep in mind to use a hook size suitable for your yarn and that when you use a thinner or thicker yarn that the finished size will also be different. Originally I worked this in Patons Canadiana yarn, and it came out to about 7 inches square.

Making the Joins

I plan on using the mattress stitch for joining this square. However, the flat braid join would also look great on this.
