3″ Open Center Quick Granny Square

This quick granny square is a great pattern to help you stay on top of your odds and ends. It can be used to make crochet blankets, bags, mats, pillows, scarves, clothing items and so many other crochet projects. And it can be worked up with the smallest amounts of leftovers.

Instead of letting your scrap yarn pile up, use this pattern to crochet up as many squares as the yarn will stretch. Label them so you don’t forget which yarn you used. Once you have a bunch in different colors, you can then decide what you want to make.

You can even mix and match it up with other crochet squares for even more color, textures, and pretty designs. The only thing to remember is to stick with one type of yarn throughout the project.

The possibilities are endless, and it’s a great way to stay organized and ahead of the game.

Finished Size:

The finished size is only 3 inches across. It is worked in only two short rounds, which means that you can easily use up the smallest amount of leftover yarn for a neat-looking square.

If you want to make a granny square blanket, you can use this crochet blanket size chart as a reference, to help you figure out how many squares you might need before starting the joining process.

The Yarn

I used Patons Canadiana for this quick crochet afghan square. It is a medium worsted weight yarn and workers well with a 5mm crochet hook size.

However, any yarn and crochet hook can be used to make this.

Choose a single color as shown, or use two colors, one for each round.

How It’s Made

This simple crochet square pattern is worked up in two short rounds. The first round is worked in an open stitch, while the second round is nice and solid due to the double crochet stitch.

It is easy enough for an advanced beginner to master and perfect for everyone to have in their pattern library.
