Crochet Dish Cloth ~ FREE Crochet Pattern

Make this crochet dishcloth in one or two colors as you like. It’s a great pattern to use up your odds and ends as you only need a small amount of yarn, especially if making it in two colors.

I’ve tried so hard to see what shapes I’m seeing here. The way the dishcloth is pictured below I’m seeing mountains. But if you look at the green, I see upside-down Christmas bells!

In addition to the written pattern, I’ve also included a video tutorial at the end. Although easy, I labeled it as an intermediate pattern because it requires that you work the triple crochet stitches into a skipped stitch two rows below. The triple crochets are worked entirely in front of the chain 1 spaces so that they remain free at the back. The image below shows the back view.

Choose a Cotton Yarn

I used a #4 worsted weight dishcloth cotton. I believe I used Bernat Handicrafter and Lion Brand in this one. The yellow is Handicrafter and the green is Lion Brand. Generally, I don’t recommend that you blend brands, but they are both similar in texture and weight, and so I went with it.

The main thing is that you choose cotton because it holds up much better while washing dishes. It’s also heat resistant if you choose to make mats to match this.

Work it up in one or two colors as you like.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials

Yarn: Bernat Handicrafter Cotton (Worsted Weight, #4; 100% Cotton; 1.75 oz/50g; 80yds/73m) 1 ball or 2 colors.
Crochet Hook: I 5.50MM
Other: Scissors, Yarn Needle.

Finished Size

7″ x 7″

The cloth measures 7 inches square. But in a multiple of 4 for your starting chains, you can easily adjust this as you need to. It’s a nice solid texture that would work great as a hotpad, placemat or even a table runner.

Notes

To Change Color: Work the stitch as normal until the last step and you have two loops left on hook; drop first color, pick up new color and draw through both loops.
Carry unused yarn up along the side if working with two colors.
Work this in one or two colors as desired.
The dishcloth worked in two colors has one row more than the one in a solid color.

Crochet Dishcloth Pattern Instructions

Row 1: (RS) With CA, ch 20, sc in 2nd ch from hook and into each ch across. Turn. [19 sc]

Row 2: (WS) Ch 2 (does not count as st), dc in first 3 sts, *ch 1, sk next st, dc in next 3 sts; rep from * across. (Change to CB in last st if working with two colors.) Turn. [15 dc and 4 ch-1 sps]

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, *sk next st, working in front of previous row so that the ch-1 is not encased, 3 tr in skipped st 2 rows below, in 1 row below, sk next st, sc in next st; rep from * 3 times; sc in last st. Turn [19 sts]

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first st and into each st across. (Change to CA in last st if working with two colors.) Turn.

Row 5: Rep row 4 from * to *.

Rows 6-17: Rep rows 2-5.

Note: If working this in only one color, count the last row (row 17) as part of the edging and sc around three sides only for the edging.
