Crochet Hat and Cowl Set – Intermittent Crossed Half Double

Here is a crochet hat and cowl set with a pretty texture that you can crochet up in a solid color, striped design or in blocks of colors. Thus, the perfect free crochet pattern to help you clean up your yarn stash.

The set not only works up quick and easy, but you can also easily adjust the size to fit everyone in your family and circle of friends. It’s great for making gifts and craft fair items!

The Size

Hat: The finished size as given is 18″ in circumference by 9.5″ tall for the hat. It will fit a teen or adult small.

Cowl: The cowl measures 26″ in circumference by 6″ high/wide.

Both can be increased or decreased as needed in a simple multiple of two for the stitch pattern.

Use this crochet hat size chart as a reference if you are unable to take measurements of the recipient before starting on your crochet hat project.

The Yarn

I used a light #3 acrylic yarn called Red Heart Comfort Sport. Unfortunately, the yarn has been discontinued, but other similar yarns can be used instead. Check out YarnSub for a list of possible substitutes.

The Stitch Pattern

Single crochet and half double crochet stitches cross stitches are all the stitches you need to make this quick and easy crochet hat and cowl set.

The rounds of cross stitches are separated with rows of single crochets to give you a pretty look on the fabric.

The hat is started at the brim, and worked in rows with a crochet ribbing until you reach the desired size for the circumference. Then you begin working in rounds until you reach the height that you want. Lastly, two rounds of decreasing by working two single crochet stitches as one over two stitches from the previous round.

Add a pom pom or leave it as is.
