Crochet Cotton Tote Bag Pattern – Ambler
This crochet cotton tote bag pattern is worked up in cotton yarn and a cross-stitch design for a nice, sturdy bag for everyday use. It is a practical, stylish accessory, perfect for running errands, the market, or spending the day out and about.
Choose your favorite color from a pretty variegated yarn as shown, or work it up in stripes or a solid color to match your favorite outfits.
This crocheted cotton tote bag pattern is easy to crochet for those familiar with the extended single crochet and the cross stitch.
The extended single crochet looks great when worked in combination with a chain 1 to give you a beautiful eyelet stitch. As for the cross stitch, it gives you a nice sturdy texture.

The bottom of this bag and the handles are worked from the right side without turning. However, the body of the bag is worked by turning after each round.
This bag is started at the bottom and worked to the top in one piece, so you don’t have to worry about weaving in lots of ends.

Once the bag is all crocheted up, line it with this crochet bag liner, which gives you the option to add pockets and a zipper.
Tip: Most of my bags are crocheted in cotton yarn. I like to use cotton because it is sturdy. However, if you plan on lining the bag, you can use whatever worsted weight yarn you have on hand, because the bag liner will reduce the stretch.

Handles
- All rounds of the handles are worked from the Right Side.
- Lay the bag flat to place your markers for the handles. Count over 18 sts on the sides of the bag and place stitch marker in 19th stitch. Counting the stitch markers, you should have 20 sts marked off in the middle. Do the same on the other side. Stitch markers should align on each side of the bag. Do not crochet into the 20 stitches in the middle. Here is a tutorial.
- Note: To keep things even, I like to crochet into the back bumps of the chains made for the handles.
- Rnd 46 (RS): Ch 1, sc in same st as join and into each st up to marked st, *loosely ch 60 (or any number depending on how long or short you want the handles), sk the 20 sts marked off in the middle*, sc in next 36 sts; rep from * to * once; then sc in remaining sts; join with sl st in first sc. [72 sts and 120 chs]
- Rnd 47: Ch 1, sc in same st as join and into each st and ch around; join with sl st in first sc. [192 sts]
- Rnds 48-52: Ch 1, sc in same st as join and into each st around; join with sl st in first sc. [192 sts] Fasten Off.
