Crochet Hat and Cowl Set with Extended Single Crochet

This is a very simple crochet hat and cowl set. It’s somewhat lacy so not all that cozy for the cold weather that we’re having this year. At the same time, it’s better than nothing, you just wear your hair down with it for extra warmth. Or, wear it under a hood. Yet another option would be to line it with a fabric material!

This crochet hat and cowl set makes for a nice gift idea for just about anyone on your list because it can be customized to fit any size head.

The hat has a nice length so you can wear your hair up if you like. As for the cowl, wear it long like a scarf, or wrap it around the neck to keep extra warm.

Finished Size

The finished size for the hat is 20 inches in circumference by 9.5 inches tall.

The cowl measures 68 inches in circumference by 6 inches wide.

But in a simple multiple of two, both the hat and cowl can be crocheted to any size that you need from baby to adult. Here is a crochet hat size chart to use as a reference.

The Yarn

I made mine with Red Heart Comfort, which is a medium #4 weight yarn. But any similar yarn that gives you the stretch you’re looking for will work.

Super Saver, Vanna’s Choice, Patons Canadiana or Bernat Premium are a few others that you could use to make this.

The Stitch Pattern

The crochet hat pattern is started at the brim and worked in rows until you reach a desired circumference. Then it is joined and you begin working in rounds,

The rounds are crocheted with the extended single crochet and chain one spaces. The cowl is worked with the same stitch.
