Mercerized Cotton Yarn Dishcloth Pattern Information

Materials

  • Yarn: Lion Brand Yarns – 24/7 Cotton (Medium, #4; 100% Mercerized Cotton; 3.5oz/100g; 186yds/170m) Color: Silver, 1 ball
  • Crochet Hook: H 5.00mm
  • Other: Scissors, Yarn Needle.

About the Yarn

I worked this dishcloth in Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, a mercerized yarn. The mercerization process involves a chemical treatment that helps to make the yarn strong and durable by shrinking the cotton fibers down. The process also improves the luster and helps prevent pilling, shrinkage, and discoloration, which are often a concern when washing cotton.

The yarn tends to have a stiffness to it, which makes it great for scrubbing pots and pans, sinks, floors, and other areas that could use a good cleaning!

One downside is that the fibers are less absorbent than some other cotton suitable for dishcloths.

Although marketed as a worsted weight yarn, it seems a lot thinner and gives you a lighter fabric than most other dishcloth cottons.

Overall, the yarn is a great choice for making dishcloths and scrubbers.

Measurements

  • Gauge: 4 sts = 1″.
  • Finished Size: 7.25″ by 7.25″

Although square after crocheting, it stretches to a length of about 11″ when wet. So it’s a fairly decent-sized cloth, even though it looks small after completion. How you make it is up to you, but you can always decrease by a few rows if 11″ long is too big. Adding an edging may help to keep the dishcloth more on the square side.

The with also can easily be adjusted if needed in any even number of chains.

Abbreviations

  • Ch/Chs = Chain/Chains
  • Rep = Repeat
  • Sc = Single Crochet
  • Sk = Skip
  • Sp/Sps = Space/Spaces
  • St/Sts = Stitch/Stitches
