Crochet Kerchief – Hdc V-st and Tr

Crochet a kerchief to hide a bad hair day, or to keep your hair back in style. It is perfect for warm summer days or any time of the year.

The kerchief crochet pattern works up quickly and easily, and ties at the back for a comfortable fit. I did not add an edging to this kerchief, but instructions are provided for those who wish to do so. Crochet Kerchief Pattern Information

Skill Level: Easy

Materials

  • Yarn: Scheepjes Stone Washed (Fine, #2; 78% Cotton, 22% Acrylic; 50g; 130m) 1 ball 
  • Crochet Hook: G – 4mm
  • Other: Scissors, Yarn Needle.

Measurements

Gauge: 15 sts = 4″.
Finished Size: Measures approximately 17″ wide across the top and 11″ deep.

Abbreviations

  • Ch/Chs = Chain/Chains
  • FO = Fasten Off
  • Hdc = Half Double Crochet
  • Rep = Repeat
  • RS = Right Side
  • Sc = Single Crochet
  • Sk = Skip
  • Sl St = Slip Stitch
  • Sp/Sps = Space/Spaces
  • St/Sts = Stitch/Stitches
  • Tr = Triple Crochet
  • V-St = V Stitch
  • WS = Wrong Side

Special Stitch Instructions

V-st: (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in designated ch, st, or sp.

Easy Crochet Kerchief Pattern Instructions

Row 1 (WS): Ch 2, (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in 2nd ch from hook. Turn. [2 hdc and 1 v-st, OR 4 hdc and 1 ch-1]

Row 2 (RS): Ch 4 (counts as first tr, now and throughout pattern), tr another two times in first hdc, 3 tr into ch-1 sp, 3 tr in last hdc. Turn. [9 sts]

Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc v-st in next st, *sk next 2 sts, v-st in next st; rep from * across to the last st, hdc in last st (4th ch). Turn. [2 hdc and 3 v-sts]

Row 4: Ch 4, tr another two times in first hdc, 3 tr into first v-st and into each v-st across; 3 tr in last hdc. Turn. [15 sts]

Rows 4-20: Rep Rows 3 &4.

Row 21: Rep Row 3. DO NOT TURN.

Edging and Strings

Tie Strings & Row 22: *Ch 50 for string. Working into back bumps, sc in 2nd ch from hook and into each ch across.* With RS facing, continue to sc into each st and ch across in Row 21. Rep from * to * for 2nd string. Join with sl st and FO, OR, continue with the edging.

Optional Edging: With RS facing, sc evenly along the two remaining sides working 3 sc into the bottom point. When you finish the 2nd side, join with a slip stitch to the bottom of the first st made in the first string. FO.
