Crochet Bag Pattern – Spring Lane

Customize this easy crochet bag pattern to fit your style and needs. You can easily adjust the bag height for a tote bag or a purse, and the strap length can be adjusted to suit your preferred way of carrying the bag.

Next, choose your colors. I chose an ombre yarn, but you can choose a solid color, or several solid colors for a pretty striped design. Therefore, a perfect stashbuster to tidy up your yarn corner.

Lastly, choose whether or not you want to line your crocheted bag. Unlined, it makes for a great market or beach bag. And with a strong liner, you can use this as a book bag or a tote for all your errand runs. Use this tutorial on how to line a crochet bag. The tutorial includes instructions for a zipper and inside pockets to help keep things neatly organized.

Handles

Lay the bag flat to place your markers for the handles. Count over 20 sts on the sides of the bag and place stitch marker in 21st stitch. Counting the stitch markers, you should have 20 sts marked off in the middle. Do the same on the other side. Stitch markers should align on each side of the bag. Do not crochet into the 20 stitches in the middle. Here is a tutorial.

Count off 20 stitches in the middle of the bag. Do not crochet into these 20 stitches.

Notes

  • To keep things even, I like to crochet into the back bumps of the chains made for the handles.
  • Continue to work the rest of the bag from the right side without turning.

Rnd 50 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first st and into each st up to marked st, *loosely ch 60 (or any number depending on how long or short you want the handles), sk the 20 sts marked off in the middle*, sc in next 40 sts; rep from * to * once; then sc in remaining sts; join with sl st in first sc. [80 sts and 120 chs]

Rnds 52-56: Ch 1, sc in same st as join and into each st around; join with sl st in first sc. [180 sts] Fasten Off.
