Twisted Ear Warmer Crochet Pattern with Crossed HDC

If you love textures, then you will enjoy this simple twisted crochet ear warmer pattern, which is worked up in the half double crochet cross stitch. The stitch not only is pretty, but it is also nice and cozy for the winter to protect your ears.

This free crochet pattern makes for a nice stash-buster pattern as you don’t need much yarn, even if worked in a solid color. However, to help you clean up some smaller odds and ends, you could change the color after each row. It will look great in a two-color striped design, or in a pretty rainbow color. Either way would be easy to do.

This ear warmer works up quick and easy, which always makes it a nice gift idea for those living in cold climates.

The Size

The finished measurements are 21″ in circumference by 3.5″ wide. I don’t like my headbands too wide, but if you do, you could easily increase by another two rows or so. As for the circumference, it is super easy to adjust in any multiple of 2+1.

It will be easy to make this crochet ear warmer pattern in every size from baby to adult sizes. This ear warmer size chart can be used as a reference. Just make it about 1-2 inches longer than needed before joining because the twist takes away from the length.

The Yarn

I used Vanna’s Choice, a medium-weight yarn. It not only gives you a nice stretch, but the yarn is slightly thicker than some worsted weight, which in return results in a nice cozy winter ear warmer.

Any similar worsted-weight yarn can be used as a substitute. Simply do a gauge check and make adjustments to the stitch counts as necessary to obtain the size you want.

The Stitch Pattern

The stitch pattern is super easy provided you are comfortable with making the crochet cross stitch. This one is worked with the half double crochet stitch in between rows of single crochets. Together the two stitches give you a beautifully textured and cozy fabric.

Step 1

To sew the twist, fold the band lengthwise with the Right Sides together and the Wrong Sides facing the outside.

Step 2

Layer the band as shown so that the edges overlap from the center. You can place your stitch markers in the middle if you like. I just eyeballed it, because you can adjust it in Step 5 as needed.

Step 3

Then fold one end over the other as shown below.

Step 4

Next, fold the second end over so that the ends interlock.

Step 5

You should have four layers. Make adjustments as needed to make sure everything is centered evenly.

Step 6

With your tail end of the yarn, and using a tapestry needle, sew across making sure to go through all four layers.

Step 7

Turn right side out to hide the seam. Easy Peasy!!!
