Alternating Shells and V’s Crochet Scarf

Choose your favorite worsted weight yarn and hook size to make this crochet scarf pattern. A stitch multiple is provided making it easy to customize in size, whether you’re making it for a child or an adult.

I chose a plain color, but the stitch also looks nice in stripes or color blocks. The color options are endless from a simple stripe on one or both ends to bold stripes throughout.

It is worked up with a pretty shell and v-stitch to create a nice lace and texture on both sides of the fabric.

Alternating Shells and V’s Crochet Scarf Pattern Information

I did not add an edging to this pattern. However, I did provide basic instructions on how to add a single crochet edge to make it nice and straight.

Skill Level: Easy

Materials

  • Yarn: Loops and Threads – Soft Classic (Worsted Weight (#4) 100% acrylic, 7 oz/198g – 354 yds/324m) Color: Coffee, 1 ball
  • Crochet Hooks: I/5.5mm, J/10-6.00mm
  • Other: Measuring Tape, Scissors, Yarn Needle.

Measurements

  • Gauge: 13 sts = 4″.
  • Finished Size: Approximately 7.5″ wide by 60″ long

Crochet Abbreviations

Ch/Chs = Chain/Chains
Dc = Double Crochet
Hdc = Half Double Crochet
Rep = Repeat
Rnd/Rnds = Round/Rounds
RS = Right Side
Sc = Single Crochet
Sk = Skip
St/Sts = Stitch/Stitches
V-St = V Stitch
WS = Wrong Side

Special Stitch Instructions

V-St: (Dc, ch 3, dc) in st indicated.

Small V-st: (dc, ch 1, dc) into designated st.

Crochet Scarf Pattern Instructions

With I hook, ch 26, or any multiple of  6 + 2.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and into each ch across. Turn. [25 sts]

Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in first st and into each st across. Turn. [25 sts]

Row 3: With J hook, ch 1, sc in first st, *sk next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * across. Turn. [25 sts]

Row 4: Ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch-1), work another dc in first st (small v-st made), sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc, *sk next 2 dc, v-st in next sc, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc; rep from * to last 3 sts; sk next 2 dc, small v-st in last sc. Turn. [3 v-sts and 2 small v-sts] 

Row 5: Ch 3 (counts as first dc, now and throughout pattern), work another 2 dc in first st, sc in next sc, *5 dc in center ch of next v-st, sc in next sc; rep from * to small v-st, work 3 dc in last leg of v-st (3rd ch). Turn. [25 sts]

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in first dc, sk next 2 dc, v-st in next sc, *sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc, sk next 2 dc, v-st in next sc; rep from * to last 3 sts, sk next 2 dc, sc in last dc (3rd ch). Turn. [4 v-sts]

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *5 dc in center ch of v-st, sc in next sc; rep from * to across. Turn. [25 sts]

Rows 8-111: Rep Rows 4-7.

Row 112: With I hook, ch 3, dc in next st, *hdc in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next st**, dc in next 3 sts; rep from * across to last 2 sts ending last rep at **; dc in last 2 sts. Turn. [25 sts]

Row 113 (RS): Rep Row 2. Fasten off.

Optional Edging

Rnds 1-2: Continue with I hook, ch 1, sc evenly around working 3 sc in each corner; join with slip stitch in first sc. Fasten off.
